The Los Angeles Angels have been relying on Mike Trout for most of their success for the past decade. Now, when they almost had a playoff team, they need to go out and get some help for the man to finally bring them to the playoffs since his rookie year.
The first thing on their list this offseason is to go out and get a true ace to lead the rotation. Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller believes that the Angels should trade for the Texas Rangers' two-time Cy Young Jacob deGrom, who might be on the trade block for Texas.
"If the Rangers are serious about trying to trim payroll this offseason, why not go straight to the top of the list…Mike Trout is undeniably well into the back nine of his career. 2026 is also the Angels' last year with Taylor Ward under contract—as well as, mercifully, the final year of Anthony Rendon's $245 million deal. And though they flirted with contending deep into the summer, even doing a bit of buying at the trade deadline while just two games below .500, it was the pitching staff that really let them down, allowing the most runs of any team in the American League en route to becoming a 90-loss mess,” Miller wrote.
This past season, deGrom posted a 12-8 record, 2.98 ERA, 185 Ks, and a WHIP of 0.921 over 172 innings pitched. He has two years left on his contract, plus a club option for a third. Age-wise, he’s on the same timeline as most of the aging players on the team.
The only problem with this trade is that deGrom has a no-trade clause he would need to waive; otherwise, the deal would never even start.
However, if the Rangers tell deGrom they’re going to start to phase out of contention, and the team that wants him wants to contend, he could waive his clause. Hopefully, he does, as the Angels could definitely use him to lead their rotation and make a superstar duo with Trout.
