Gary Neville makes jibe at Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta for 'great achievement'

Arsenal will be ending another season without any silverware under head coach Mikel Arteta.

Following his appointment by Arsenal in December 2019, Arteta led the squad to claim the FA Cup in his debut season and an eighth-place finish in the Premier League table.

In the next campaigns, Arsenal witnessed gradual progress under Arteta's management, including being first runners-up in the league table for the last two seasons. The Gunners also won the FA Community Shield in 2020 and 2023.

In terms of the Champions League, Arsenal reached the quarterfinals in 2023-24, and this season, they made it to the semifinals for the first time in 16 years. However, despite the close calls, Arteta is yet to bring a major trophy, apart from the FA Cup, to the Emirates in his ongoing over five years managerial stint.

While there have been several and even frequent managerial changes in clubs whenever coaches were unable to lead their respective squads to win silverware, Arteta's run at Arsenal seemed to be still going strong.

Now, Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has pointed out the same, referring to Arteta still retaining his position at Arsenal despite a trophy drought as a 'great achievement.'

What did Gary Neville say about Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta?

Arsenal faced a 2-2 draw against Premier League titleholders Liverpool at Anfield over the weekend. Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of the clash, Neville addressed Arteta's managerial run at Arsenal, mentioning that clubs usually no longer hold onto such 'kind of patience.'

"It's a great achievement to not win a trophy in five years and still be the manager of a Premier League team. We thought those days were gone where you can have this kind of patience being afforded to you. I think it's a good thing, that for five years to not win a trophy, ordinarily there would be a manager under pressure. That's significant in the sense that you think there is progression," said the Manchester United legend.

Neville also stated that he was glad that Arteta has recently acknowledged how his squad have not done well in the Premier League as compared to their past season.

"I'm glad that on Friday in his press conference he said 'we've gone backwards in the Premier League', because they've tickled our backs a little bit for the last month with the Champions League and it took the heat off them a little bit in how bad they've been in the league being 13, 14 points from where they were last season and the season before," he added.

While Arsenal are all out of chances for this season, Arteta & Co. will be hoping for a better ending in the next, with the Spanish manager's current contract valid until the summer of 2027.
