Gardner Minshew injury update: Chiefs QB gets good news on knee injury

1 hour ago 2

Gardner Minshew left the Kansas City Chiefs' Week 16 contest versus the Tennessee Titans early, and though the Chiefs feared Minshew tore his ACL, the team and the veteran quarterback got some very good news on Monday.

After an MRI, tests revealed that Minshew's ACL is intact. Though he is still expected to miss time and may not play again this season, Minshew avoided the worst-case scenario, a torn ACL and a lengthy rehab.

"Chiefs QB Gardner Minshew received some good news, as his ACL was spared, sources say following the MRI. His knee is still injured and should miss game time," Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said on X.

Minshew signed a one-year deal with Kansas City this offseason, and though it remains to be seen whether he'll be back with the franchise in 2026, avoiding a major injury is a fantastic development for his career.

Since entering the league in 2019 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Minshew has mostly been a backup, but has shown flashes as a starter. The 29-year-old has started 49 games in his career, tossing 68 touchdowns to 35 interceptions with a 17-30 record.

Despite barely seeing the field in 2025, Minshew should still be able to land a backup quarterback job elsewhere in 2026 if he doesn't return to Kansas City.

As for the Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes and Minshew being out with injuries puts them in a rough spot to end the season. Chris Oladokun finished Sunday's loss versus the Titans, but the team also signed Shane Buechele on Monday. We'll see who ends up getting the start for Kansas City on Christmas Day versus the Denver Broncos in Week 17.
