Kimi Antonelli claimed his maiden race win in Formula 1 ahead of Mercedes teammate George Russell, while Lewis Hamilton ended his long wait for a podium finish with Ferrari.

We're now at Suzuka for the Japanese Grand Prix, where Antonelli would once more be the man to beat after qualifying on pole position.

Here is how the race played out.

F1 Japanese Grand Prix results

Kimi Antonelli claimed his second straight race win as he took victory at the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix.

The Italian was able to snatch first place from Oscar Piastri after a safety car derailed the McLaren driver's afternoon at Suzuka. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc rounded out the podium, with George Russell fourth, world champion Lando Norris fifth, and Lewis Hamilton sixth.

Max Verstappen, who was eliminated in Q2 of qualifying on Saturday, could only manage P8.

It had looked like being a largely disappointing day for Antonelli after he dropped from first to sixth on the opening lap, but the critical moment came when Oliver Bearman's heavy crash triggered the safety car.

With the top three of Piastri, Russell and Leclerc having already pitted, Antonelli was able to make a much quicker stop under the safety car conditions, allowing him to regain the race lead. An imperious drive from there saw the 19-year-old build an insurmountable lead to take the chequered flag and become the youngest world championship leader in history.

"It feels pretty good," he said when asked about the achievement. "It is too early to think about the championship, but we are on the good way.

"In the race, I had a terrible start, just need to check what happened but then I was lucky with the safety car to be in the lead and then the pace was just incredible. It was a really nice second stint. I felt very good with the car and very pleased with that.

"On the medium [tyres], we were strong once we had free air, and on the hard, the pace was incredible. I don't know what the outcome would have been without the safety car, but it made my life a lot easier."

When is the next F1 race?

The next race is not until May 3, the Miami Grand Prix. This is because Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were scrubbed from the calendar on safety grounds because of the conflict in the Middle East.
