How tall is Jon Scheyer? Where Duke coach ranks among tallest college basketball head coaches

1 hour ago 3

Jon Scheyer is the head coach of the Duke Blue Devils men's basketball team. He is one of the few active coaches who is not only a former player, but also coaching at his alma mater. Scheyer played for the Blue Devils from 2006 to 2010, winning the national championship with Duke in his final season. He never made it to the NBA, but played in the G League for one year and then internationally for two years. Scheyer returned to Duke as an assistant coach in 2014. He was named head coach of the Blue Devils in 2022, taking over for longtime head coach Mike Krzyzewski.

One of the first things you notice when watching Scheyer coach is that he is tall. Given that he is a former player, it makes sense, but especially in sideline interviews, he stands significantly taller than his interviewer. In team huddles, Scheyer is either eye-to-eye with his team or at least not starkly shorter like other coaches.

Here is more on Scheyer's height and how he stacks up against other college coaches.

Tallest coaches in college basketball

Head coaches aren’t measured like their players are, so accurate records of all the heights of active head coaches in college basketball don’t exist. Scheyer is among the tallest active head coaches in college basketball, but he isn’t the tallest head coach in history.

The tallest college basketball head coach in history is considered to be Constantin Popa. He stood 7-3 and served as the head coach for the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds women’s basketball team from 2011-2016.

Among men’s basketball head coaches, Patrick Ewing was the head coach at Georgetown from 2017 to 2023 and is 7-0, easily clearing Scheyer. Ewing is not confirmed to be the tallest men’s basketball coach in history, but at 7-0, he has a good chance at the honor
