The Philadelphia Eagles pulled off a quarterback trade with the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday that had many believing it could lead to a trade of one of another one of their quarterbacks.
According to multiple reports, the Eagles acquired quarterback Andy Dalton in a trade with Carolina that saw Philly give up a 2027 seventh-round pick to the Panthers.
The overwhelming belief was that this would lead to a trade of quarterback Tanner McKee, seeing as how the Eagles' quarterbacks room is now very crowded when including Jalen Hurts and Dalton.
However, The Athletic's Brooks Kubena is hearing that McKee might not actually be available via trade, even after the Dalton addition.
"Checked in with those familiar with Tanner McKee and any emerging trade market," Kubena wrote. "I would not take today’s Andy Dalton trade as an immediate step in that direction."
This might be true for now, but perhaps Philly's mind will change once things play out over the course of the offseason. It's possible the Eagles will ultimately opt to trade whoever doesn't win the competition for QB2.
While McKee remains unproven, he has shown flashes in his limited opportunities with the Eagles and could draw interest around the NFL.
Three teams that should have an eye on the situation are the Pittsburgh Steelers, Las Vegas Raiders and Arizona Cardinals.
The Steelers still don't have an answer from Aaron Rodgers. While we would guess he will return for another season in Pittsburgh, the future Hall of Famer choosing to retire would leave Pittsburgh in need of a quarterback to add to the competition that would include Mason Rudolph and the unproven Will Howard.
McKee or Dalton would be a good fit for Pittsburgh in that scenario, although we would prefer the younger player in McKee, who would at least give some semblance of hope for the future, something the Steelers don't have.
In Las Vegas, the Raiders could use more competition for their backup situation. As of right now, Aidan O'Connell is the only quarterback on the depth chart until the team drafts Fernando Mendoza in April.
With Mendoza incoming, having a veteran like Dalton as his backup would be invaluable for the young signal-caller.
The Cardinals have a duo of Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew, but clearly there is nothing to write home about for that veteran duo, especially with the Cardinals rebuilding.
Adding a young quarterback like McKee would make sense for Arizona.
