Dolphins predicted to replace Tua Tagovailoa with backup QB

1 hour ago 3

It's no secret that Tua Tagovailoa's time with the Miami Dolphins is coming to an end. It is a feeling of when, not if.

After being replaced by Quinn Ewers towards the back end of last season, the writing is on the wall, and now even more so with a new head coach in Jeff Hafley and a new general manager.

Which way the new-look Dolphins will go at quarterback is anyone's guess, but one thing most can agree on is that Tua isn't "the" guy long-term.

So, what will Miami do? CBS Sports' Zachary Pereles has named the Dolphins as a potential landing spot for free agent quarterback Malik Willis.

"This has already become a popular landing spot ever since the Dolphins hired former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley," Pereles wrote. "Willis would be a good mid-range option: a quarterback with the potential to be more than a bridge guy, but not one who would require a big contract."

Willis an option?

It is certainly one avenue Miami can go down, but it must figure out Tua's situation first, and with his huge contract hanging over their heads, the Dolphins can't trade him (who would want the huge contract), and cutting him is too expensive (pre-June 1 is $99 million in dead money per Over The Cap).

But in Willis, he showed some good signs in Green Bay (where Hafley was) as he stepped in for Jordan Love, so there is a connection there.

Malik would be a cheap, holdover sort of option, but one that, if he develops, could end up being the starter.

But that Tua contract...

It will haunt the Dolphins, I fear.
