Kevin O'Leary has opened up about a pivotal scene in Timothée Chalamet-starrer Marty Supreme. The businessman, who makes his acting debut in the movie, had to spank the actor during one scene.
Marty Supreme is about a table tennis player, named Marty Mauser (played by Timothée Chalamet), looking to become a champion. During his journey, he meets Kay Stone (played by Gwyneth Paltrow), who is married to a successful entrepreneur, Milton Rockwell (played by Kevin O'Leary). He realised that Rockwell could play a big role in his dream of becoming a champion.
In one of the scenes, Rockwell spanks Mauser with a table tennis racket. In an interview with Variety, O'Leary revealed that Chalamet refused a butt double for that scene. He said:
“When it came time to whack him, there was a stunt a**. There was a double. [Chalamet] wouldn’t do it. He said he’ll do it himself. He didn’t want some other a** immortalized.”O'Leary explained that the director, Josh Safdie, took 40 takes, and the shooting went on until 4 am in the morning. He added:
“Josh was saying, ‘You’ve got to wind up harder'. I was really whacking him.”The Shark Tank star also explained that it was a key scene in the movie, as Marty Mauser needed the humiliation. He said that Mauser “had pissed me off so much and insulted me so many times that capital punishment was correct.”
“I never felt satisfied that he suffered enough for what he did. Even now, I’m still pissed,” O'Leary added.According to Variety, Marty Supreme opened with the second-largest opening weekend at A24, earning $17.4 million after its release on December 25.

Hence, he has had to balance preparing for all these roles while also learning table tennis for his role as Marty Mauser. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, published on October 7, he explained:
“Everything I was working on, it was this secret. I had a table in London while I was making Wonka. On Dune: Part Two, I had a table in Budapest [and] Jordan. I had a table in Abu Dhabi. I had a table at the Cannes Film Festival for The French Dispatch.” “If anyone thinks this is cap, as the kids say — if anyone thinks this is made up — this is all documented, and it’ll be put out. These were the two spoiled projects where I got years to work on them. This is the truth. I was working on both these things concurrently,” he added.Professional table tennis players, Diego Schaaf and Wei Wang, who are also a couple, worked as technical advisors on the movie. Wei Wang is also a former US Olympian, and the couple helped Timothée Chalamet learn and improve his table tennis.
Chalamet avoided using a stunt double for the role, although many intense scenes were filmed without a ball, which was later added via CGI.
