Cowboys predicted to beat out Commanders for $7 million All-Pro linebacker in free agency

The Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders are still in search of a starting linebacker in NFL free agency.

After cutting Logan Wilson, who has since retired, the Cowboys left themselves even shorter at the position. Dallas has been rumored to have interest in multiple linebackers throughout the offseason, but nothing has materialized.

As for the Commanders, they have a potential solution in one of their own free agents in linebacker Bobby Wagner, but he remains available on the open market and it isn't clear if the two sides will remain together in 2026.

At this point, Wagner is probably the best player available at the position, and that has led to The Sporting News' Vinnie Iyer predicting a competition between the Cowboys and Commanders to acquire Wagner's services.

However, Iyer predicts Wagner, who is projected for a one-year, $7 million contract by Spotrac, will ultimately land in Dallas.

Bobby Wagner: Cowboys

The Commanders are still the best fit but Dallas could snatch his leadership at a big position of need.

Even at the age of 35, the former All-Pro linebacker has shown he's still an impact defender.

According to Pro Football Focus, he registered elite pass-rush (92.4) and run defense (90.3) grades, which ranked second and fifth, respectively, among linebackers.

Wagner has typically been a plus in coverage, but he struggled in that area last season with a grade of 51.1. That isn't a huge deal, though, as DeMarvion Overshown can hold his own.

And speaking of Overshown, there are few players in the NFL who can provide a better mentor than Wagner, whose presence in the locker room will also boost Dallas' defense as a whole.

If Wagner is interested and the money makes sense, Dallas should absolutely sign the 10-time Pro Bowler.
