The Washington Commanders are pretty much the only team being mentioned as a possible destination for Brandon Aiyuk.
That doesn't mean for sure that the San Francisco 49ers' wide receiver will end up in the nation's capital. But it's sure looking like a real possibility.
The thing is, there are still a couple hold-ups in play.
ESPN's John Keim broke it down further in a new article on Thursday. Essentially, it comes down to two things.
Aiyuk is still under contract with the 49ers, which means a trade would have to happen to get him as things stand.
And if Aiyuk became a free agent, the Commanders wouldn't be rushing to give him a long-term deal.
"Multiple team sources said Washington is well aware of Aiyuk's desire to play with Daniels," Keim writes. "But Aiyuk remains under contract and the Commanders would be unlikely to trade for him or, when free, sign him to anything other than a one-year, prove-it deal."

The free agent reality for Aiyuk is that he likely wouldn't get anything more than a one-year deal from any team. His last season, with injury and then in-house drama, was too messy for a new team to invest too heavily in him.
At the same time, Aiyuk is clearly talented. As long as he's healthy, he'd be a worthy addition for the Commanders or for many other teams.
At this point, the link isn't going away. When Aiyuk's name comes up, so will the Commanders. Washington might just have to wait a little while until actually getting anything done.
