The Washington Commanders and San Francisco 49ers have made moves at wide receiver this offseason, but more help is needed for both teams.
In Washington, the Commanders have added some depth pieces but the team is still in the market for a veteran No. 2 to play opposite Terry McLaurin.
Meanwhile, the 49ers' biggest addition was Mike Evans, but San Fran is expected to lose both Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings, and Kendrick Bourne has already departed in free agency.
One player both teams could target is former New England Patriots wideout Stefon Diggs, who was suggested as a possible option for the Commanders and 49ers in an article by Pro Football & Sports Network's Alex Kennedy.
"On the field, though, Diggs is still playing at an extremely high level," Kennedy said. "He finished fourth in the NFL in PFSN’s WR Impact Metric, and coming off a torn ACL in 2024, still ended the 2025 season with over 1,000 receiving yards."
"Potential Landing Spots: Titans, Commanders, 49ers," he added.
Why Patriots released Stefon Diggs
The reason behind the Patriots cutting Diggs from his $63 million contract was all about the finances and had nothing to do with his play.
Diggs was set to have his salary cap hit increase by a large amount and the Patriots did not want that on their books. After failing to agree to a reworked deal, Diggs was shown the door.
At 32 years old, Diggs is still playing good football after he posted over 1,000 yards in 2025. He could still be a No. 1 for a lot of teams, but he would be a fantastic WR2 for Washington and the 49ers.
Does Diggs make sense for 49ers, Commanders?
The Niners should definitely be trying to get younger at wide receiver, but they also need to add more talent to the position. There would be nothing wrong with taking a one-year flyer on Diggs, who would create a great one-two punch with Evans.
Diggs would be a welcomed addition in Washington, also, as he'd form a strong duo with McLaurin that would greatly benefit Jayden Daniels.
With their need at wide receiver being more dire, we'd suspect Diggs has a better chance to land with the Commanders than in San Francisco.
