MLB fantasy baseball sleeper: Carson Williams deserves immediate draft pick, pickup after Rays news

1 hour ago 3

Each year, fantasy baseball managers try and figure out which top prospects will see ample time in the major leagues.

Minor league stats don't help anyone, no matter how good the phenom might be. Carson Williams is one of the guys in the mix here. The Tampa Bay Rays' shortstop is going to be a star.

Turns out, he'll be showing up in the big leagues sooner than many expected.

On Tuesday, the Rays revealed that Williams will be their Opening Day starting shortstop.

What to do with Carson Williams in fantasy baseball

Williams is immediately a top-20 SS in draft rankings if you still have to draft.

If you've already drafted, Williams is a priority waiver wire pickup before Opening Day.

Yes, we've got to acknowledge that he struggled in 99 at bats last season, sort of. He hit just .172. But he also had five home runs, drove in 12 runs and stole a pair of bases.

Still just 22 years old, Williams should now know what to expect in the majors.

He's ranked the No. 45 prospect in baseball by Baseball Prospectus after being a top-10 prospect last season. There's still plenty of reason to believe in him.

And for what it's worth, this spring he was 9-for-30 (.300) with two doubles and a home run.

He's certainly got upside that's worth pursuing, particularly now that we know he's got an Opening Day job.
