Colts sign 6-foot-7 former Notre Dame basketball player to NFL contract

The Indianapolis Colts are taking their latest stab at converting a college basketball player to a tight end.

According to ESPN's Stephen Holder, the Colts have signed former Notre Dame basketball player Carson Towt to an NFL contract. Indianapolis will give him a chance at tight end.

Towt played four years of college ball at Northern Arizona before transferring to Notre Dame for his final collegiate campaign in 2025-26.

Towt was not NFL draft eligible because he didn't play college football.

This is the second college basketball player the Colts have signed in recent years, with the other being fellow tight end Mo Alie-Cox, who has spent eight years in Indianapolis.

Safe to say that, that experiment has worked out better than expected, so it's worth taking another swing on Towt.

The Notre Dame product stands at 6-foot-7 and weighs 225 pounds, per Sports Reference, so he's got the size to play the position in the NFL.

Towt's best season came in 2024-25, when he averaged personal bests in points (13.3) and rebounds (12.4). In 2025-26, he posted 5.9 points and nine rebounds per contest.

The Colts have five other tight ends on their roster, a list that includes Tyler Warren, Alie-Cox, Will Mallory and Drew Ogletree, so the deck will be stacked against Towt and his best chance at sticking in the NFL will be on the practice squad.
