Cody Rhodes is set to defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Drew McIntyre at Saturday Night's Main Event. However, just a day before the show, The American Nightmare could be mysteriously attacked on SmackDown, putting his upcoming bout in jeopardy.
McIntyre was initially slated to face Jacob Fatu in a number one contender's match two weeks ago. However, Fatu was taken out backstage before the bout, leading to The Scottish Warrior receiving another opportunity to challenge Cody for the title.
The identity of The Samoan Werewolf's attacker is still unknown. On this week's SmackDown, Cody Rhodes could suffer the same fate as Jacob Fatu and be mysteriously taken out backstage. The prime suspect in Fatu's case is Drew McIntyre, who could be blamed for attacking Cody as well.

This could write The QB1 off television for the foreseeable future, putting a question mark over his title match against McIntyre this weekend. This would add another intriguing angle to the ongoing "mystery attacker" storyline. While the blame naturally falls on The Scottish Warrior, the actual culprit could be someone else.
That said, this angle is only speculative. Even if it plays out, it would just be to build more intrigue around Saturday Night's Main Event, as Drew McIntyre vs. Cody Rhodes will likely happen as advertised.
So, who could be Cody Rhodes' attacker?
IF the abovementioned scenario plays out, the person behind Cody Rhodes and Jacob Fatu's attacks could turn out to be the same. Fans are speculating that Randy Orton could be revealed as the mystery attacker.
The Viper has been absent from WWE TV for the past few weeks. Orton has suffered many setbacks this year, failing to secure any meaningful victories. There have been hints of the veteran turning heel, and if he is revealed as the culprit behind Fatu and (potentially) Rhodes' attacks, it would be an effective way to complete his turn to the dark side.
Orton has issues with Drew McIntyre as well. Therefore, he has the motive to disrupt the Scotsman's title match by taking The QB1 out. That said, this is also speculative, and nothing has been confirmed.
