Opening Day is here, and the Atlanta Braves are down multiple starters. With really only Chris Sale in the rotation right now, they need to go out and get some rentals to make sure they can stay competitive.
While Atlanta fans have been begging the Braves to sign Lucas Giolito, it’s looking more and more unlikely. With that in mind, FanSided’s Austin Owens predicts the Braves will go in the direction of a cheap rental, and pick up a veteran who’s been in the MLB for a decade in Frankie Montas.
“One team's released player is another team's treasure (or something like that). This philosophy could potentially be applied to Frankie Montas in 2026. Montas spent last season with the New York Mets and went 3-2 in seven starts with a high (6.28) ERA. The Mets decided there was no room on their roster for the 32-year-old hurler. Now, Montas is just waiting on the best fit. Although they likely won't pursue Giolito, the Braves are still likely to make some move to address their starting pitching needs. This may be far from what Atlanta fans want to hear but Montas is far more likely to land with the Braves than about any other available starter out there,” Owens wrote.
As Owens stated, Montas pitched only in nine games, where he posted a 3-2 record, 32 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.603 over 38 innings. Even though he had such a small sample size, the data points to Montas being at least a competent end-of-rotation starter.
Montas’ market value also only calls for a rental deal, a one-year, $6.4 million contract. So, if the Braves sign him and he doesn’t do well, then they can just cut him and won’t take that much of a loss.
Hopefully, the Braves sign him, or just do something, fast. Pitching is a big requirement to win games, and right now, they have nothing.
