Blue Jays get brutal injury update on 22-year-old beloved righty pitcher with IL news

The 2025 MLB season was a great one for the Toronto Blue Jays. They came up incredibly close to a World Series title. Fortunately, the roster is even better this year, and they should be able to contend once more.

However, before the season could even begin, the Blue Jays were dealt some tough news on one of their top pitchers.

As Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports, Trey Yesavage, the beloved righty pitcher who was a postseason hero for Toronto in 2025, will begin the season on the injured list in a brutal report for the Blue Jays.

Blue Jays to miss Trey Yesavage to begin 2026 season

"News: Trey Yesavage will open the season on the IL with a right shoulder impingement," Matheson reports.

Yesavage hasn't appeared in a spring training game this year, so this news isn't a complete surprise for the Blue Jays. But it is a brutal report for the beloved righty pitcher.

After making his MLB debut last season with just three regular-season starts at the end of the year, where he posted a 3.21 ERA with a 1-0 record, Yesavage was tasked with a big postseason workload.

In the postseason, Yesavage made five starts and six total appearances. He posted a strong 3.58 ERA  with a 3-1 record, and 39 strikeouts with a .188 batting average allowed in 27.2 innings pitched.

The 22-year-old right-hander has shown he's deserving of a spot in a Major League rotation, but heading into year two, he will be sidelined to begin the year.

Drafted by the Blue Jays in the first round of the 2024 MLB draft, Yesavage has ascended to the Majors just one year into his professional career. He's a pitcher with a lot of promise, but heading into his second year, he will miss some time on the IL.
