College GameDay host Rece Davis has taken a subtle jab at Johnny Manziel for missing a scheduled GameDay appearance ahead of Saturday’s CFP game. College GameDay was at College Station on Saturday as Texas A&M prepared to host Miami in their first-round playoff game.

Manziel, the Aggies’ legendary former quarterback, was billed to appear as the guest picker. However, the controversial former player failed to show up, forcing the GameDay crew to bring in Alex Caruso to fill in at the last moment.

During a College GameDay podcast following Manziel’s no-show, Davis targeted a subtle hit at the former quarterback without mentioning his name. Davis questioned the legitimacy of Manziel’s excuse for not showing up. He said:

“Jake Paul… Anthony Joshua. When you go to a fight like that, you’ve got to be very careful about where you eat breakfast the next morning because it can leave you ill and give you difficulty in reaching the locals where you are scheduled to be. But I digress… I just wondered. Is that what the kids are calling it these days? A ‘bad breakfast?’ Anyway, wouldn’t cast dispersion anywhere. For those that follow closely, you’ll be able to read between the lines there. You have to follow a little closely.”

Johnny Manziel apologizes for College GameDay no-show

Johnny Manziel had put out a statement about his absence on the show the day after the game via his Instagram story, tendering an apology. He wrote:

“I will have plenty more to say about what transpired yesterday. There is almost nothing on this earth that would have madhimselfe me miss that game. To all the people that genuinely reached out and checked in on me, I cannot thank you enough.”

Manziel had earlier been spotted at the Jake Paul-Anthony Joshua boxing match in Miami on Friday night. He posted pictures of him at the fight on his Instagram stories. Before his last absence, Manziel last appeared on a College GameDay broadcast in 2024.

He was on the set as a guest picker as the Aggies took on Notre Dame in the 2024 season opener. Although the Aggies ended up losing the game, their legendary quarterback came away with a 4-3 record.

Johnny Manziel missed another engagement on Saturday with Bleacher Sports that would have involved him providing content from the sidelines. The Aggies lost the game 10-3 to the Hurricanes in front of their home fans.
