Clark Hunt reveals “big difference” behind Missouri losing Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs to Kansas

Clark Hunt laid out what cost Missouri its NFL franchise on Monday. He pinpointed the roadblock that sent his family looking across state lines after six decades in Kansas City. Hunt runs the Chiefs as chairman and CEO, taking over the organization his father, Lamar, built from scratch.

He addressed reporters after dropping the news that his team will abandon Arrowhead Stadium. Questions turned to why Kansas beat Missouri in the race to keep Patrick Mahomes and Co.

"We had a great dialogue with Missouri all the way through the end of last week," Hunt said. "Just frankly, not everything was resolved that needed to be resolved. The big difference is we were working with one party here, the State of Kansas, and in Missouri, we were working with the governor's office, the county, and also the city. We just didn't get there for the timeline."

Jackson County voters killed Question 1 earlier this year before booting county executive Frank White from office. Kansas pushed through its STAR bonds proposal in less than three months. Missouri's legislature took more than 13 months to get a stadium bill across the finish line.

Clark Hunt says there is pain in leaving Arrowhead

Clark Hunt said walking away from Arrowhead Stadium stings after calling it home. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly branded Monday's deal a "game changer" for her state's economy.

"There is some pain on leaving Arrowhead, and I'll be at the top of that list," Hunt said.

Kansas is getting a domed facility in Wyandotte County, along with a training complex in Olathe. Hunt's family will cover 40% of construction costs, while Kansas will handle the remaining 60%. The dome opens in 2031 and positions the region to bid on Super Bowls, college football playoff games and Final Fours.
