Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves is experiencing a full breakout to start the 2025-26 season, and head coach JJ Redick is putting all his faith in the former undrafted guard.
Through the Lakers’ first four games, Reaves is averaging 34.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 10.0 assists per game. Reaves had 51 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists against the Sacramento Kings, then followed that up with a 41-point performance against the Portland Trailblazers, then followed that up with a 28-point, 16-assist performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves that included a game-winning floater as time expired.
Reaves’ recent stretch of play couldn’t come at a better time for the Lakers, who have been dealing with injuries to stars Luka Doncic and LeBron James. Head coach JJ Redick recently praised Reaves, and spoke about the higher standards he now holds him too.
“It's as much Austin's team as it is LeBron's team or Luka's team,” Redick said. “I told him he's out of excuses. You're no longer the undrafted guy who's a young player. You're one of the guys now.”
Reaves has improved each season of his NBA career, and it appears that now he is starting to fully breakout, and should be in the mix to make the All-Star team later this season if his superb play continues. Also, the Lakers are going to need Reaves to keep up this pace until they are able to return to full strength.
