The Boston Red Sox may have already lost Alex Bregman's interest in re-signing with them after the third baseman opted out of his three-year, $120 million contract after the first year. Bregman's latest social media activity has fans buzzing.
On Wednesday, a fan noted on social media that Bregman had changed his profile picture on Instagram. Previously, it was a photo of him in a Red Sox jersey, but currently, his profile picture is a black tuxedo, which he wore at the ESPYs award night.

Fans shared their interpretation of what this means for the Red Sox and their interest in Bregman going forward.
"He’s gotta be doing it on purpose at this point and I respect the f*ck outta that," one fan commented. "Just sign bichette. would it be so bad to have an infielder who mashes and doesn’t update his pfp like once a week," one fan wrote. "If he changes it to a jersey swap of him in another uni, I might actually have a heart attack," one fan reacted. "He is the new James Bond now… -Twitter, probably," one fan reacted. "I really hope he ends up unsigned. He’s clowning around too much," one fan added. "We are we freaking out like there wasn’t a better, younger and cheaper player in the market right now?" another fan asked. If not Alex Bregman, who can Red Sox go after?
Alex Bregman is the premier option at third base. However, if he's not interested in coming here, the Red Sox have some options to comb through.
The best infielder to replace him would be Bo Bichette, who played for the Toronto Blue Jays before becoming a free agent this offseason. However, he plays shortstop and thus, the Red Sox might need to make some adjustments internally or have him play at third.
Another option is third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who comes with plenty of power, as he hit 38 home runs in 2025. Yoan Moncada is another solid option at third base. Boston could also consider promoting top prospect Marcelo Mayer to full‑time third base. Then there is Japanese international free agent Okamoto Kazuma, who can play third base as well.
As such, there are many infield options available on market, but it remains to be seen if the latest move from Bregman was the final nail in the coffin for the potential reunion.
