When chatting about the aftermath of 9-1-1 Season 9, Episode 13, “Mother’s Boy,” showrunner and writer Tim Minear told DECIDER, “If anyone notices that there’s something going on with Buck, it’s going to be [Eddie].” And he wasn’t lying!
DECIDER’s exclusive clip of 9-1-1 Season 9, Episode 14, “D.I.Y.” offers a first look at a worried Eddie (Ryan Guzman) clocking Buck’s (Oliver Stark) post-road trip trauma. Rather than sitting with his grief, talking things out, and putting in the hard the work needed to heal, however, Buck is trying to put on a brave face, bury his emotions, and move forward as quickly as possible.
The minute-long clip checks in with Buck and Eddie in the 118 locker room, where a concerned Eddie confronts Buck about lying to avoid therapy.
“I thought you said you were gonna go to therapy Tuesday night,” Eddie asks. “Yeah, I was gonna go…I forgot Maddie had invited me for dinner, so I rescheduled,” Buck replied.
Knowing Buck far too well the to buy the lie, Eddie pressed him for details and asked when exactly he rescheduled the appointment. An annoyed Buck clarified, “I’m going to reschedule,” and left the room in hopes of ending the conversation. But Eddie — hands in pockets, and eyes on a mission — followed his bestie and refused to let up.

Buck has seen and recovered from his fair share of outrageous traumas in the past, but Eddie so bluntly reminded him, this time is different.
“You were locked up in a kid’s bedroom role playing with a psychopath,” Eddie said, questioning why Buck felt the need to lie about therapy. “For like a day,” Buck said, trying to downplay the horrific experience. “I don’t see why it’s that big of a deal. I guess I’m tired of talking about someone that doesn’t deserve my time, I can’t heal if I never move on… Just let me do this my way.”
Before the scene ended, Eddie agreed to let Buck handle his trauma on his own. But his disapproving eyes, judgmental expression, and crossed arms proved he was still fearful of the lasting, hidden toll that the events of last week’s episode would take on Buck. And for good reason!
Photo: ABCWe know Eddie isn’t one to easily give up — especially when it comes to the people he cares about. So we likely haven’t seen the last of his efforts to help Buck. Minear told DECIDER that Buck and Eddie would emerge from their hellish road trip “closer.” And while he couldn’t reveal exactly what Buck would be going through in upcoming episodes, he did say, “As far as how does he come out of this, not all injuries are visible on the outside, and there will be ramifications to what has happened. We actually start to pick that up in the next episode. And it is not over right away…”
Minear also confirmed that Buck’s invisible injuries will include grief over Bobby (Peter Krause).
“The whole thing kind of starts in the previous episode, when Buck realizes — once again — that his real family is the 118, and even Bobby knew that Eddie would be back. All season I’ve been trying to put a spotlight on individual characters and their grief about Bobby. And now it’s time for Buck,” 9-1-1‘s co-creator explained. “With the parent/child dynamics of the previous episode, this felt like a way to at least hear Buck say that sometimes he doesn’t know who he is anymore without Bobby around. I think [that’s] the thing that is under Buck’s skin. That’s really at the at the guts of it for him. I think Buck might be the most wounded in some ways, and he hasn’t really shown it yet. I’m excited for what Buck is about to go through.”
We know that Eddie and Buck’s sister Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) “will be in scenes together coming up,” too. So there’s a chance that the two most important people in Buck’s life could come together to talk about his trauma and how to help him through it.
When teasing the rest of 9-1-1 Season 9 and Season 10, Minear said Athena (Angela Bassett) has “a really thrilling story” that he’s “excited and scared about,” too. And he revealed, “I’m going to start a story here at the end of this season that’s going to carry over into next season.”
Could that continual storyline be about Buck? We’ll have to wait and see! But based on everything we’ve heard and seen in the clip above, it’s safe to say that Buck will still be struggling after tonight’s episode…
