Directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Alex Garland, the post-apocalyptic horror sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is scheduled to arrive in theaters on January 16, 2026. The film is the second part of a new trilogy and serves as a direct follow-up to 28 Years Later, which was released earlier in 2025.
The story picks up in a dangerous, post-apocalyptic Britain where the "Rage Virus" still exists, but the biggest threat is now other people. The plot follows a teenager named Spike (Alfie Williams), who has been taken in by a terrifying cult known as the "Jimmies." This group is led by Sir Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell). Meanwhile, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) is living at the "Bone Temple," a strange place where he tries to study the infected.
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple features returning stars like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Erin Kellyman and Cillian Murphy, who returns as Jim from the original 2002 movie.

1) Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Ian Kelson

He lives at the "Bone Temple," a strange place he built to remember the dead. He spends his time studying the infected people, hoping to understand the virus and find a way to save what is left.
Fiennes most recently starred in the British historical drama film The Choral, in which he played Dr Henry Guthrie. He also starred in 28 Years Later, which is set before the events of the upcoming sequel. The British actor is also set to appear in Francis Lawrence's The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (2026).
2) Alfie Williams as Spike

He is captured by a scary group called the "Jimmies" and is forced to live with them and follow their rules. Williams also played the same role in the previous part, 28 Years Later.
3) Cillian Murphy as Jim

Though he only appears at the end of this film, his arrival is a huge moment that prepares the survivors for the final battle ahead.
After his breakthrough role in 28 Days Later (2002), Murphy appeared in several blockbusters such as Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, Inception, Oppenheimer and more. He will return as Thomas Shelby in Tom Harper's Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, the continuation film of the British historical crime drama television series Peaky Blinders.
4) Jack O'Connell as Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal

He wants to control everyone he finds and makes his followers wear blonde wigs and act like a strange cult.
More recently, O’Connell appeared in the period vampire film Sinners, besides his appearance in 28 Days Later earlier in 2025. Known for his role in the British teen drama series Skins, he is also set to appear in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, scheduled for release in 2027.
