Cam Newton has once again come forward to criticize New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye. On Friday's episode of the "4th and 1" show, he said that the sophomore still has a long road ahead to prove himself while being a contender for this season's MVP award.
Neton said that one of the reasons why the Patriots have succeeded in 2025 is because of the coaching staff change and the arrival of coach Mike Vrabel.
"Drake Maye is well and capable, has all the upside and skillset," Newton said. "But last year, under his player's status, the head coach was fired. That's not to say, 'Oh man you can't say that. That wasn't all on Drake Maye. He was a young quarterback.' But, does Jerod Mayo have a job right now? Offensive coordinator was Alex Van Pelt. Is he an offensive coordinator anywhere in this league?•

Fans on social media criticized Cam Newton for his take and also claimed that he was jealous of Maye's success with the Patriots.
"Scam Newton dissing every QB that came after him that has achieved more," one fan commented.@4thand1show Scam Newton dissing every QB that came after him that has achieved more
You’re a bitter ass hater. What happened to appreciating greatness and not putting down players, because you want to create bullshit narratives this doesn’t make you look better you are an embarrassment.
@MLFootball Cam Newton is jealous of Drake Maye’s talent.
@4thand1show Dude hating cause he was buns in New England
U bringing up his rookie year to prove a point is shameless lol
Biggest hater on the planet. Can I really hope you drop the act and just say you don’t like him. You feel slighted by the Pats cause you lost your job to Mac Jones. All this is.
Clearly someone’s still salty about losing his job to Mac jones
Cam Newton joined the Patriots in 2020 after nine seasons with the Panthers. That year, he recorded 2,657 yards and eight TDs passing while helping the team to a 7-9 record.
In 2021, the Patriots drafted Mac Jones in the first round. He competed with the rookie for the QB1 job before being released by the team during the final roster cut.
This season, the Patriots won the AFC East for the first time since 2019. Drake Maye has tallied 4,203 yards and 30 TDs passing in 16 games.
Mike Vrabel gets honest about Drake Maye's MVP chances
Last week, the Patriots secured a dominating 42-10 victory over the New York Jets. In that game, Maye completed 19 of 21 passes for 256 yards and five touchdowns.
After the game, coach Mike Vrabel was asked to share his thoughts on his quarterback winning the league MVP award. He said that he would vote for Maye if he had the opportunity to do so.
"Well they don't give me a vote," Vrabel said. "But I would, there is nobody else we would want as our quarterback or that I want as our quarterback. And so to be able to do that and as the plays go through progression, ... as soon as you work through your progression, I think he did that. Some really good designs but also some great executions."The Patriots next face the Miami Dolphins in their final regular-season game on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
