The New York Yankees let their fans breathe a sigh of relief when they re-signed Cody Bellinger. However, they’ve yet to address their starting rotation, which, at the moment, only has Max Fried and Cam Schlittler healthy.
After whiffing on Freddy Peralta, the Yanks’ choices are starting to dwindle. Fansided's Zachary Rotman predicts the Yanks will be just fine, and will trade for Kansas City Royals All-Star ace Kris Bubic.
“The New York Yankees re-signed Cody Bellinger, completing their outfield and leaving both Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones without a clear path for playing time. New York would almost certainly love to keep at least one of those outfielders, if not both, but one should be expendable for a starting pitcher. Even after acquiring Ryan Weathers, the rotation is a clear need for the Yankees, and with Gore and Peralta off the board, options aren't wide-ranging. Bubic might not be as good as Peralta, but he is coming off an All-Star year, and given this is his final season of club control, he shouldn't cost too much,” Rotman wrote.
This past season, Bubic posted a 8-7 record, a 2.55 ERA, 116 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.178 over 116 innings pitched. Even though he was battling injuries, he still received his first All-Star nod for his efforts.
Bubic would also be incredibly cost-effective for a Yanks team trying to save money. He’s still under team control for this next season, and is set to make $3 million. Depending on how he does, New York can offer him a long-term extension afterwards.
Hopefully, the Yankees consider this trade, as the entire AL East has made upgrades this offseason. If they want to compete, they need to make some moves too.
