Yankees plan to try a guy who's never played first base at that position this spring

The New York Yankees have Ben Rice to play first base every day in 2026.

But if they want to get him out of the lineup against some tough left-handed pitchers, they don't  have an obvious alternative.

And unless they sign someone or make a trade, their best platoon option could be... Amed Rosario?

Yep. MLB insider Joel Sherman reports the Yanks are going to give Rosario work at first base during Spring Training.

On the one hand, it might be a silly plan. Rosario hasn't played a single MLB inning at first base.

On the flip side, he can probably figure it out. He was a long-time shortstop who has already played second base, third base and all three outfield spots at the MLB level.

This would also be foremost about Rosario's bat.

Rice is a lefty hitter who mashes righties, but the Yanks could look to get the platoon advantage when southpaws come into the game.

The 30-year old Rosario hits 36 batting average points higher in his career against lefties. The right-handed Rosario has a .298 career average against lefty pitching with an .800 OPS.

The Yankees have a lefty-heavy lineup, so they could likely use Rosario in a variety of spots when a left-handed pitcher is on the bump for the other team.

But hey, adding even more versatility to their already most versatile player isn't a bad plan at all. It's certainly worth trying in the spring.
