Seattle Seahawks' 'Dark Side' defense on the iconic 'Legion of Boom'

The 2025-26 Seattle Seahawks defense is one of the best of all-time, especially if they finish the job and defeat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 60.

But there is also another iconic defense in Seattle that still deserves its flowers. On Monday, Fox Sports ranked the nine greatest defenses in Super Bowl history and coming in at No. 7 is the 2013-14 Seahawks, aka the “Legion of Boom.”

That year, Seattle led the league in scoring defense, total defense, pass defense, takeaways and red-zone efficiency, with names such as Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, Bobby Wagner, Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril.

The Seahawks would go on to destroy Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl.

This year’s Seahawks also made an all-time defensive top 10 in recent days, appearing on the all-time DVOA, or “Defense-adjust Value Over Average,” list at No. 6.

It’s nice to be compared to other great defenses, but the Seahawks want to create  an identity of their own.

“There’s one ‘Legion of Boom.’ We know that,” said safety Julian Love at Super Bowl opening night. “A lot of those guys are still around and we get a lot of inspiration from, but we’re not them. We carry ourselves way different than those legends.”

“We kept hearing comparisons to the ‘Legion of Boom’ and we thought it was time for us to have our own name, and I think the ‘Dark Side’ stuck,” said defensive tackle Leonard Williams. “One of coach Mike (Macdonald’s) messaging is a play style and place that nobody wants to play. In Seattle, it gets darker during the wintertime. We have a very suffocating defense.”

“Once I got here everything that you know about Seattle’s defense,” said linebacker Ernest Jones IV. “When you put on those pads and you put on a Seahawks jersey and you’re on the defense, you want to mimic and be as close to the ‘Legion of Boom’ as possible. In our own right, we are doing our own thing. But having that stature to live up to, guys in that locker room have lived up to it.”
