Yankees get update on potential trade cost for Rockies' Hunter Goodman

The New York Yankees have a few areas they could address at the 2026 MLB trade deadline, but if there was one spot they could ideally upgrade by August 3, it would be catcher.

Austin Wells just hasn't been good enough, and the Yankees would ideally land a solid player in a deal this summer. Ryan Jeffers is someone heavily linked to the Yankees, but recently Hunter Goodman has emerged as a top trade target for the Yankees.

The Colorado Rockies catcher would be an awesome pickup, but it won't come cheap. ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel revealed what the potential cost of a trade for Goodman could be this summer, with one player type atop the Rockies' wish list.

"As much as the Rockies have waited years for another homegrown star, they are in such a dire pitching situation that Goodman at least offers them an opportunity to land high-ceiling arms," Passan and McDaniel write.

While the Rockies could justifiably ask for George Lombard Jr. in a trade, they might be targeting pitching help more than any other position.

Elmer Rodriguez, Carlos Lagrange, and Ben Hess are the three best pitching prospects the Yankees could trade to land Goodman. If the Yankees could bring in the power-hitting catcher at the cost of some of their pitching prospects, it would be worth it.

This season, Goodman has 30 home runs with 2.4 bWAR and a .255 batting average, and .881 OPS with a 125 OPS+ this season. He's already one homer shy of his career high despite nearly 200 fewer at-bats than his 31-homer 2025 season.

Goodman would be an incredible trade pickup, and if the Yankees could pull it off, they should. With the Rockies seemingly seeking out pitching talent, the Yankees should strongly consider moving multiple of these pitching prospects.

They have a great pitching staff already, and if there is a way to add Goodman, the Yankees, in a wide-open American League, could emerge as the top World Series contenders out of the AL.

While the cost for Goodman isn't fully known, it seems like the Yankees have the resources to acquire him. The question is whether they'd be willing to part with the massive haul it'd take to land him.
