The New York Yankees lost Juan Soto to the New York Mets this offseason and responded by making a flurry of moves. One of those moves was trading for Devin Williams of the Milwaukee Brewers.
Williams is a two-time All-Star and two-time National League Trevor Hoffman Award winner. However, early returns have not favored the Yankees.
Williams has an 11.25 ERA in 10 games and has given up 10 earned runs. His career high for earned runs in a single season is 15. He is on pace to surpass that by a great margin this year. He does have four saves, but the reality is he does not look like the All-Star closer the Yankees thought they were getting.
Aaron Boone was asked if Williams would benefit from lower-leverage opportunities.
"We'll see," Boone said, according to The Athletic's Chris Kirschner.

Williams has not always been a closer. He was once the set-up man for Josh Hader on the Brewers. Williams found great success in that role, but the Yankees might want to consider keeping him out of a leverage situation completely, for the time being. The Yankees could turn to Luke Weaver as the closer while Williams works things out.
Williams has proven he can be an elite closer, but right now, something is not clicking. He has the support of his teammates, but until he can prove he can be trusted to close games, the Yankees may need to consider a change.
