The New York Yankees and their crosstown rivals, the New York Mets, were expected to be the biggest spenders this offseason. However, the two New York teams have had a relatively subdued winter.

The Yankees haven't added any high-profile free agents to the roster, while former closers Devin Williams and Luke Weaver switched to the Mets in free agency. Despite signing Williams, Weaver, and Jorge Polanco in free agency, the Mets have seen several high-profile names leave the franchise this offseason.

Mets fan-favorite Pete Alonso signed for the Baltimore Orioles in free agency to end his stint with New York, while All-Star closer Edwin Diaz signed for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Steve Cohen's team has also traded away veterans Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil this offseason.

Although the New York franchises are linked with All-Star outfielder Cody Bellinger, who had a strong 2025 season with the Yankees, MLB insider Jon Heyman called it the worst offseason for both teams.

"Pitching has to be their #1 thing," Heyman said. "They're in on Bellinger, but won't say it's very likely with the Yankees. The worst offseason currently is split between the Yankees and Mets."

Mets reportedly interested in signing two-time Cy Young winner to bolster rotation

While Jon Heyman highlighted the need for starting pitching for the New York teams, he reported that the Mets are one of the ideal spots for Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, who has been a subject of trade rumors all offseason.

However, the Mets aren't the only team interested in the two-time Cy Young winner, as defending World Series winners Los Angeles Dodgers are also rumored to be in on Skubal.
