Will Josh Allen ever break horror Bills Super Bowl cycle?

1 hour ago 3

The Buffalo Bills have been around the rim of Super Bowl contention for the best part of five to six years, and stumbled at every turn.

With Josh Allen inheriting a Super Bowl drought from Jim Kelly, in which the Bills went to four straight Super Bowls and lost them all, this franchise is a sucker for punishment.

But will the tide ever turn?

For Sports Illustrated's Matt Verderame, the Bills are one of 12 teams never to taste Super Bowl glory, and he's detailed how close the franchise has gotten to the ultimate glory.

"The Bills have a pair of titles to their name, but both came before the merger. Buffalo won the 1964 and ’65 American Football League championships, beating the Chargers in both title games," Verderame wrote.

"Of course, the Bills went to four consecutive Super Bowls from 1990 to ’93, the only team to make four consecutive appearances in the big game. Unfortunately for Buffalo, it lost to the Cowboys twice, along with the Giants and Washington. The Bills advanced to the AFC championship game in 2020 and ’24, losing to the Chiefs on both occasions."

Can Allen break the drought?

Well, after multiple failures, he couldn't, and Sean McDermott paid the ultimate price.

Now it is Allen and Joe Brady tasked with getting the franchise's first Super Bowl title, and given the rise to prominence of Drake Maye, Bo Nix, along with Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, and Trevor Lawrence in the AFC, Allen's path is tough.

Which is why this season was seen as the perfect chance to break through, but Nix and the Denver Broncos ruined it.

Now, you have to ask the question of whether Allen will suffer the same fate as Kelly, and get this franchise so close to Super Bowl glory, but ultimately end up falling short.
