Diamondbacks seeking to sign All-Star first baseman who isn't Paul Goldschmidt

The Arizona Diamondbacks were linked to a free agent reunion with Paul Goldschmidt earlier this month.

At this point, it sounds like the Diamondbacks would welcome any number of veteran first basemen still available on the free agent market.

The latest report comes from MassLive's Chris Cotillo, who says the DBacks are going after Carlos Santana.

He adds that Ty France is also in the sights of Arizona.

Santana would be fascinating, a former All Star and Gold Glove winner.

Even older than Goldschmidt, Santana is 39 years old.

He played 116 games with the Guardians in 2025, and then eight more with the Cubs. All told, he hit .219 in those contests.

Santana is a career .241 hitter with 335 home runs. He's the active leader in Major League Baseball in walks, with 1,330 in his career.

The switch-hitter has always been regarded as having some of the best plate vision in baseball. His power isn't quite what it once was, but Santana still does a solid job of getting on base.

He's also an incredibly well-respected clubhouse presence and could boost the Diamondbacks in a big way through his leadership.

It certainly would be a positive outcome for the Arizona offseason if they end up with Santana or Goldschmidt, both of whom would bring a lot of the same qualities.
