The San Antonio Spurs have a solid foundation in 2025-26.
The five-time NBA champions are a young and up-and-coming Western Conference squad that has proven they aren’t to be taken lightly.
The Spurs have beaten the defending Oklahoma City Thunder three times this season and have every reason to be excited about their chances of making a championship run starting in April.
Still, Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey isn’t sold on the idea that the Spurs would never consider breaking up their young core. In fact, Bailey went as far as to propose a trade that would send multiple key Spurs contributors to the Los Angeles Lakers for a superstar point guard and MVP candidate.
“The San Antonio Spurs are another team that should be totally happy with their current roster and trajectory,” Bailey wrote Sunday. “They have Victor Wembanyama and a ferocious young guard corps. They've already beaten the Oklahoma City Thunder three times this season.”
“The fact that they're reportedly out on a potential Giannis Antetokounmpo deal suggests they're plenty comfortable with a slow, organic build. But Luka (Doncic) is four years younger than Giannis. And at least on offense, he's a much better fit alongside Wemby.”
“Those two, with Luka's playmaking and Wembanyama's size, would comprise a genuinely unstoppable offensive duo. But they'd have to give up both of their intriguing young guards (Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle), plus plenty of draft capital, to get the Lakers to even think about doing something like this.”
For clarity, Bailey’s full trade idea would send Keldon Johnson, Harper, Castle, a 2029 first-round pick, a 2030 first-round pick swap, and a 2031 first-round pick to the Lakers for Doncic.
Don’t get it twisted, Doncic is a franchise-elevating asset who will always help the team he’s competing with compete for championships. From toying with opponents on the perimeter before having a field day from beyond the arc to operating the pick-and-roll to perfection, Doncic is an offensive wizard in every way imaginable.
The former Dallas Mavericks star is averaging 33.7 points, 8.8 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game with the Lakers this season, and would wreak havoc alongside a generational center in Wembanyama.
However, the Spurs will likely keep their promising roster intact and continue to trend in the right direction.
