Wild face Vincent Trocheck trade conundrum with Rangers

The Minnesota Wild are facing a Vincent Trocheck trade conundrum as Friday's NHL trading deadline approaches.

They won't have much time to figure out which side of the problem they fall on, either, with there being less than 24 hours to make a move for the New York Rangers' center.

Trocheck, of course, has recent winning experience. He helped Team USA win the gold medal at the Winter Olympics in that thrilling tournament journey that culminated in an overtime win in the final over Canada.

The Rangers are rebuilding, so Trocheck is a logical trade candidate. But he's also under contract for three more seasons, so they don't have to move him.

New York can keep asking for a big price, and that's the problem for the Wild.

Trocheck fits their team need in a great way.

His cost just seems to be too much.

"Trocheck looks like an ideal fit for the Minnesota Wild, but they’re balking at the asking price," The Athletic's Chris Johnston wrote on Thursday.

Johnston includes Trocheck as his No. 2 player on his trade board still remaining to be acquired, behind just Blues center Robert Thomas.

"The biggest question is whether the Rangers will get a big enough offer to act now," Johnston writes. "Trocheck recently demonstrated the kind of role he can play on a winning team while capturing gold at the Milan Cortina Olympics — dominating in the faceoff dot for Team USA while playing a key role on a penalty-killing unit that didn’t allow a single goal in the tournament. Known for exuding grit and determination, he’s got the tools to play in all situations and can handle heavy, difficult minutes."

This could be a staring contest right up to the deadline. Do the Wild pay up to get their guy? Or do the Rangers stand firm and keep Trocheck around?

The hockey world will wait to find out.
