The Boston Red Sox are keen on signing one major free agent at-bat in the offseason. All signs have pointed to the possibility of Alex Bregman resigning with the team after he opted out of his contract to enter free agency, and pursuing first baseman Pete Alonso, who also opted out of his two-year contract with the New York Mets.
According to MLB Network's Jon Morosi, speaking on the "Hot Stove" segment, the Red Sox will either get back Bregman via a long-term contract or zero in on Pete Alonso if Bregman heads elsewhere.
“I look at this as being a two-track possibility for the Boston Red Sox,” Morosi said. “Either they bring back Bregman, or they make an all-out pursuit for Pete Alonso. I like their chances to get one or the other.”•

Fans on social media had varied reactions to Morosi's comments. Few felt that signing either was a possibility, for some it seemed like a far stretch, while others thought the team should focus on pitching.
Here are the reactions:
"Why not sign both then trade for a starter? Why either or," a fan commented.@MLBNetwork @jonmorosi Why not sign both then trade for a starter? Why either or
@MLBNetwork @jonmorosi If anyone there thinks or believes Craig Breslow can out-negotiate Steve Cohen, I have bridge to sell you as well
@MLBNetwork @jonmorosi They should get both. Zero reasons they can’t!!
Gimme both Alonso & Bregman we need all the help we can get
You have to add an additional piece. You can't just add one, other wise you're exactly where you were last year. You need 2 bats to put in the middle of the lineup to support Anthony.
Jon Morosi, either both or none I reckon...
Alex Bregman and Pete Alonso had nearly identical stat lines in 2025. Bregman hit .273/.360/.462, while Alonso went .272/.347/.524. The difference was in the homers and RBIs columns, with Alonso hitting 20 more home runs and more than double what Bregman managed. However, Bregman had a 3.5 fWAR in just 112 games, compared to Alonso's 3.6 fWAR in a full season.
Jon Morosi states Red Sox set to trade for starting pitcher for an outfielder
Morosi also noted that the Red Sox can utilize their outfield depth to bring in either of the Marlins' starting pitchers, Sandy Alcantara or Edward Cabrera. That would allow them to pursue Bregman or Alonso.
"I'll actually bring it back what we just talked about with the potential of Sandy Alcantara or Edward Cabrera, because the Red Sox have an abundance of outfielders, and they could potentially move one of those outfield bats to the Marlins to bring back a pitcher, and then focus on bringing back Bregman or Pete Alonso in free agency."Starting pitchers in free agency, such as Dylan Cease and Framber Valdez, will command a hefty fee, which, if the Red Sox commit, will hamper their chance to sign a big-money at-bat.
