New York Yankees shortstop Jose Caballero made MLB history on Opening Day against the San Francisco Giants.
During the fourth inning of Wednesday night's game, Caballero became the first player to challenge a pitch with the automated ball strike challenge system.
He was unsuccessful, as the pitch called a strike against Caballero was confirmed as a strike by ABS. Unfortunately, the review of the pitch from Giants starter Logan Webb was not displayed on Netflix's broadcast.
“I wanted to go for it,” Caballero told the New York Post's Greg Joyce after New York's 7-0 victory. “I thought it was a little higher than what it showed. But at least it was close.”
MLB Hall of Fame authenticates Caballero's helmet
"After last night's game, Jose Caballero's helmet was being authenticated so it could head to the Baseball Hall of Fame as the first one tapped to signal an ABS challenge in the regular season, taking his place in baseball history," Joyce wrote X.
Joyce reported that a hat or a catcher's mask is also likely to be authenticated soon. Patrick Bailey was behind the plate for the Giants at the time of Caballero's challenge.
Make sure to keep an eye out for Caballero's helmet on your next trip to Cooperstown.
