Why Great White had shocking last-minute scratch at Kentucky Derby

Great White was just feet from the starting gate at the Kentucky Derby.

He never made it to the gate, though.

Great White was scratched just moments before the Derby began.

What happened to Great White?

He bucked up just moments before going in the gate.

He knocked his jockey off his back, and Great White flipped over onto his back.

They did a quick medical examination and had to err on the side of caution.

After that flip, the vets wouldn't let him run.

The field went from 19 to 18 at the very last moment.

This isn't something you ever really see. The jockey was lucky that he didn't get squished underneath the horse.

In the end, it's a brutal break for this team.
