LeBron James, Kevin Durant’s postgame gesture sends blunt message to anyone still trying to divide them

After the Los Angeles Lakers closed out the first-round series by defeating the Houston Rockets in Game 6 on Friday, the camera caught LeBron James and Kevin Durant sharing a long postgame embrace at center court.

It should finally stop the forced "rivalry" drama cold. They are undoubtedly intense competitors on the court. At the same time, there’s clearly a deep, mutual respect between them.

Even after the buzzer, some people still try to pit them against each other, but this footage sends them a blunt message about two being brothers, regardless of the score.

Internet keeps misreading the relationship between LeBron James and Kevin Durant

The idea that LeBron James and Kevin Durant are bitter rivals has never matched reality. They’ve shared locker rooms for Team USA, played in countless All-Star games, and always spoken highly of each other. The "rivalry" is mostly an internet invention, a war between fanbases that doesn't exist between the players.

Friday’s postgame moment proved that. James, 41, led the underdog Lakers past the Rockets in six games. Throughout the series, he averaged 23.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 8.3 assists, capping it off with a 28-point performance to close out Houston on Saturday.

Durant, 37, was essentially a spectator for the series, missing five of the six games with an ankle injury. His only appearance came in Game 2, where he put up 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists in 41 minutes.

The lopsided series result didn't change their connection. When the final buzzer sounded, they immediately found each other at center court. That warm hug was the culmination of twenty years of mutual respect.

Both players have been vocal about this bond throughout the season. Just before the playoffs began, KD reflected on his career. Per The Athletic, he told, "I’m just so grateful that I graced the league with these guys at the same time... when you get older you start appreciating how hard it is to get up every day."

James echoed this sentiment earlier in the series. Following the Lakers' Game 2 win, he said that competing against Durant is "always an honor" and something he no longer takes for granted.

They have literally developed a genuine friendship, ditching those petty rivalry narratives that transcend the box score. For anyone still trying to sell their story like a generational war, Friday night’s embrace was the final answer.

The Lakers now face the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Semifinals, with Game 1 tipping off Tuesday in Oklahoma City.
