It always felt like Inter Miami's disappointing early exit from the 2024 MLS Cup playoffs would have wide-ranging consequences, but the man to bear the brunt of the fallout was most certainly not expected to be head coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino.
Reports emerged on Tuesday that the Argentine boss would shockingly depart the club this offseason, despite having one year left on his contract.
It was a confusing and surprising development after Lionel Messi and the Herons set an MLS regular season points record and generally considered to have a positive future outlook. While the early playoff flop was highly disappointing given the regular season highs, the club seemed set up well to continue a push for trophies and future league dominance.
The Sporting News details what we know about Martino's sudden departure and how it could affect the club moving forward.

Why did Tata Martino leave Inter Miami?
U.S. based reporter Tom Bogert of GiveMeSport reported on Tuesday, November 19 that Inter Miami head coach Tata Martino would leave his post effective immediately.
No immediate explanation for his resignation was given, other than it was due to "personal reasons."
Further reports followed, such as Felipe Cardenas of The Athletic and transfer guru Fabrizio Romano. All those subsequent reports came with either similar or exact wording of his reason for departure, with all of it quite vague.
Prior to the reports, Martino was fully expected to continue in his role next season, with his current contract not set to expire at the end of the 2025 campaign. The 61-year-old joined Inter Miami at the start of the 2023 season and helped usher in rapid growth at the club in all phases.
We will likely learn more at the club's end-of-season press conference, which is scheduled for November 22.
How will Martino's departure affect Inter Miami?
Tata Martino's resignation as Inter Miami head coach could have wide-reaching consequences at the South Florida club.
First and foremost, it throws Lionel Messi's future into unexpected doubt. While it feels that much more would be required to pry Messi from the club he has publicly hinted will be his last, the sudden exit of the coach who helped bring him to Major League Soccer in the first place does hint towards some uncertainty.
An area that can be considered in far more immediate danger, however, is the future of the club's roster and youth program. Both are considered amongst the best in MLS and are littered with Martino's fingerprints.
Young Argentine talents such as Tomas Aviles and Facundo Farias no doubt were swayed to join the club by the presence of one of their country's most respected coaches, while he contributed to the development of the club's many young, emerging Latino players such as Benjamin Cremaschi, Diego Gomez, and David Ruiz.
Questions will also be asked about the future of Messi's fellow veteran stars Jordi Alba, Luis Suarez, and Sergio Busquets who will not wish to play for just any coach next season. To fit them all, the Inter Miami roster is constructed with careful consideration of how to navigate the league's convoluted roster and salary restrictions. Martino was an expert in this aspect.
With Inter Miami set to compete in next year's highly-anticipated FIFA Club World Cup on home soil, Martino's exit comes as a shock as he foregoes the chance to be involved in that global event.
There are significant questions to be answered regarding the future of Inter Miami as they look forward to next season and a redemption campaign to right the wrong of this year's postseason failure. Finding a capable replacement for Martino will be a critical step in that process, and one they likely did not expect to be necessary.
