Why Aaron Judge is getting flamed for uninspiring Team USA speech ahead of World Baseball Classic

In soccer and hockey, each team has a designated captain. In baseball, the captain position is rare. Oftentimes, a manager is seen as a team's focal point for leadership. A baseball player who has been given the captain title has done their due diligence both on and off the field for the team. 

However, Team USA opted to assign New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge as the team's captain. Ahead of the team's exhibition games to gear up for the World Baseball Classic, Judge gave the Americans a motivational speech in the locker room.

Unfortunately for the captain, many across social media deemed the speech as uninspiring and "the least motivational motivational speech." While some users just like making fun of one of the best players in baseball, Judge's speech may not have had the likes of Herb Brooks ahead of the Miracle on Ice.

Was Judge's speech as lackluster as social media made it out to be?

Aaron Judge USA speech video

The MLB posted Judge's speech on their social platforms on Monday. The captain was recorded speaking in front of Team USA players and personnel, as well as other WBC staff. Here is the speech about sacrifices and the importance of leaning into your teammates for support:

As seen in the video, the captain was smiling throughout most of the speech, which may have removed some of the power behind his words. Team USA should be out for vengeance after their loss to Japan in the 2023 WBC.

In the famous words of Yogi Berra, "Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical." While baseball is a sport that can be fun, as seen by the Savannah Bananas, American fans may have wanted to see more fire from Judge and a hunger to achieve his first professional baseball championship win.

This is what Judge said to Team USA:

"Sacrifice for your family at home. You're sacrificing for your country, and you're sacrificing for the brothers in the trenches with you every single day. And that's what they all want us to do, fellas. ... You know, we're down. We're beat up a little bit, man. You know, lean into each other, man. We're going to lay it out on the line. And if we do that, we're bringing the gold home, man. I'm telling you."

Judge's speech drew reactions far and wide across social media.
