Who is Sam Carrick? Sabres trade for 34-year old center from Rangers

The Buffalo Sabres haven't had as successful a trade deadline week as they would've hoped, at least so far.

But late Thursday night, they got a deal done for a 34-year old center from the New York Rangers named Sam Carrick.

TSN's Elliotte Friedman reported the trade just before 10:30 p.m. ET, not immediately sharing further details.

Carrick has been around the NHL for a long time, so his name might be familiar. But here's what else you need to know about him.

Who is Sam Carrick?

Carrick is a 34-year old center originally from Markham, Ontario in Canada.

He's 6 feet tall and a right-shot player.

He entered the NHL originally as a fifth-round pick by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2010 draft.

Carrick has played at the NHL level in parts of 10 seasons as he has had to continually grind to stay up. That includes time with the Leafs, Ducks, Oilers and Rangers.

This season for New York, Carrick has played in 60 games and scored four goals with six assists. He also has 29 blocked shots and 86 hits.

The bruiser has played 380 NHL games in all, with 38 goals and 45 assists (83 points). He has 701 career hits, nearly two per game.

He's not going to get lots of ice time, but Carrick is a particular kind of tone setter who can bring energy to a new team.

The Rangers are rebuilding, so trading Carrick made sense, and for the Sabres, he adds a gritty guy that can bring toughness to the roster with the playoffs in sight.
