After several weeks of heated competition, it's officially time to crown a WNIT champion — Marshall and Illinois State will fight for a title Saturday.

The postseason WNIT tournament started in 1998 as an alternate competition from the traditional NCAA tournament. Even after nearly 30 years, this weekend's matchup will mark both Marshall and Illinois State's first program appearances in the championship game.

The Redbirds and the Thundering Herd had to prove themselves to get here. Marshall overcame Arkansas State 69-62, while Illinois State defeated South Dakota 67-60 in their respective Fab Four matchups.
