Jose Mourinho faces his former employers, Real Madrid, with Benfica needing a Champions League miracle.

Benfica are 29th in the standings with just six points from their seven matches so far. Only a win can get them into the knockout playoffs and, even then, the Lisbon giants would need several results to fall in their favour.

Madrid are all but assured of a direct passage to the Round of 16, sitting third on 15 points. The cluster of eight teams on 13 points means it is essentially implausible that enough would pass Madrid to land Los Blancos in the playoffs.

Remarkably, for two giants of European football, this will be only the fourth meeting between the clubs and the first since the days of Eusebio at Benfica and Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas and Paco Gento at Madrid.

Eusebio scored twice as Benfica overhauled a first-half Puskas hat-trick to win the 1962 European Cup final 5-3 in Amsterdam, and he also bagged a brace in a 5-1 first-leg victory that underpinned a 6-3 aggregate triumph in the 1964/65 quarterfinals.
