About Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness?

Set in 1916 Paris, the movie traces three wild days in the life of painter Amedeo 'Modì' Modigliani, close to breaking down. Dodging cops while rushing across Montparnasse’s artsy alleys, he pictures quitting painting, walking away from the town that once lit him up but now drags him under.

Still, friends like artist Maurice Utrillo, Chaïm Soutine, plus his British inspiration Beatrice Hastings won’t allow him to vanish without a trace.

Fueled by advice from his close art dealer Léopold Zborowski, Modì gets pulled into dreams, strange sights, or deep sorrow. When wealthy American collector Maurice Gangnat arrives in Paris, the artist faces a choice that could either transform his career or destroy him completely.

In a 2024 interview with Variety, Johnny Depp shared that the story of Modigliani’s life:

“Modigliani was, of course, one of the great contemporary artists of all time. But he also represented an era and point of view where new possibilities still existed. His vision fascinates me.”

Depp further stated:

“He doggedly walked to the beat of his own drum, and possessed a natural allergy to convention during a time where the norm was being openly challenged across every medium. It would be foolish not to admit that everything Modigliani ever stood for, and continues to stand for, resonates deeply within me.”

Modì: Three Days on the Wing of Madness also marks Depp’s reunion with Pacino after Donnie Brasco (1997).
