The twists and turns of the 2026 World Baseball Classic already have produced numerous memorable moments, with more still to come as a champion is crowned.
One thing we already know is a new team will lift the trophy this year after reigning champion Japan fell to Venezuela in the quarterfinals. Japan won three of the previous five WBCs, so its failure to even reach the semis was a shock.
The only other nations with a title to their credit are the United States and the Dominican Republic, and Team USA will try to add a second title to go with its 2017 crown after squeaking past the D.R. in the first semifinal. Venezuela ended Italy's magical run in the other semi and is guaranteed its best WBC finish after previously topping out in third place in 2009.
