What happened to Josh Simmons? Latest update, return timeline for Chiefs left tackle

The Kansas City Chiefs will play their third consecutive game without starting left tackle Josh Simmons when they take on the Washington Commanders on Monday night in Week 8.

Simmons last suited up for the Week 5 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars but has missed the previous three contests because of a personal matter.

While the exact details behind Simmons' issue is unknown, we do have at least some information about it thanks to Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, who also revealed the team expects Simmons to return at some point this season.

What happened to Josh Simmons?

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt told reporters on Monday night that Simmons is dealing with a "private family matter," although he didn't go into more details beyond that.

Hunt did add, however, that the team is in communication with the 2025 first-round pick and he is expected to return at some point.

"It's a private family matter and we've had good communication with him. There's an understanding by both parties of where he is and we're hopeful to have him back with the team some time in the future," Hunt said, per Matt Foster of KSHB41.

Josh Simmons return timeline

Unfortunately, it remains unclear when exactly Simmons will be back.

What we do know, based on Hunt's comments, is that the left tackle will return at some point in 2025.

Who is filling in for Josh Simmons?

The Chiefs have deployed Jaylon Moore at left tackle in Simmons' stead.

Moore was signed to a two-year, $30 million deal during the offseason and it has proven to be a huge signing given Simmons' absence.

Over the past two weeks, Moore has surrendered one sack and five pressures, according to Pro Football Focus.
