Rumors that Elon Musk's xAI-powered digital encyclopedia, titled Grokipedia, was peddling misinformation circulated just one day after the website went online. In September 2025, the Tesla owner and tech billionaire announced his idea to develop a competitor for Wikipedia to combat the “political and ideological bias” of the popular crowdsourcing website.
On October 27, 2025, Musk launched Grokipedia, announcing via an X post that the AI-powered website was "fully open source, so anyone can use it for anything at no cost."
Grokipedia.com is fully open source, so anyone can use it for anything at no cost
A new report by Wired claimed the website contains misinformation and pushes conservative talking points, pointing out that the AI-powered encyclopedia purported that p*rnography worsened the AIDs epidemic.
The publication stated that it tried searching for “gay marriage” on the Grokipedia search bar, which did not yield any results. However, one of the suggestions was for “gay p*rnography," and the subsequent article claimed that "behaviors idealized in p*rnography" rapidly aggravated the HIV/AIDS epidemic in gay communities in the 1980s.
“This marked the onset of what would become a devastating crisis disproportionately affecting gay male communities, where behaviors idealized in p*rnography—such as unprotected receptive an*l intercourse and multiple anonymous partners—aligned directly with primary transmission routes, leading to rapid seroconversion rates,” the entry claims. The article also noted that the website's entry about transgender people used "transgenderism" twice, a word that is now considered offensive by the trans community. The page also reportedly claimed that the onset of social media served as a potential "contagion" for the increasing numbers of trans people.
Furthermore, the page referred to trans women as “biological males” who have “generated significant conflicts, primarily centered on risks to women's safety, privacy, and s*x-based protections established to mitigate male-perpetrated violence.”
Users noted similarities between the content on Wikipedia and Grokipedia
In late September 2025, Elon Musk responded to investor and entrepreneur David Sachs' complaint about Wikipedia being "hopelessly biased," saying that xAI was currently building Grokipedia, dubbing it a "massive improvement" over its counterpart.
"We are building Grokipedia @xAI. Will be a massive improvement over Wikipedia. Frankly, it is a necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe," he wrote. On October 27, 2025, Musk again took to X to announce that the AI-powered website was live. Grokipedia is reportedly fact-checked by Grok and follows a similar layout to Wikipedia.
version 0.1 is now live. Version 1.0 will be 10X better, but even at 0.1 it’s better than Wikipedia imo.
In another X post on October 27, Musk claimed that his online encyclopedia's goal was to provide users with "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth," writing:
“The goal of Grok and Grokipedia is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. We will never be perfect, but we shall nonetheless strive towards that goal."However, several users noted that some pages on Musk's AI-powered encyclopedia had content sourced directly from Wikipedia, with a disclaimer on the page adding:
“The content is adapted from Wikipedia, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License.”According to The Verge, Musk reportedly admitted to the issue when a user pointed it out on social media earlier this month, adding that the team would fix the problem by the end of the year. Some of the topics with overlapping content between both websites include MacBook Air, PlayStation 5, Lamborghini, AMD, and Nobel Prize, among others.
In a statement to The Verge, Lauren Dickinson, a spokesperson for Wikimedia Foundation (the non-profit behind Wikipedia), reaffirmed that human knowledge was Wikipedia's strength, saying:
“Wikipedia’s knowledge is — and always will be — human. Through open collaboration and consensus, people from all backgrounds build a neutral, living record of human understanding. This human-created knowledge is what AI companies rely on to generate content; even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist."The key difference between Grokipedia and Wikipedia is the content creation. While the former contains content generated by Grok, the latter is written by volunteer contributors. Additionally, Wikipedia allows users to edit information, while its counterpart does not offer that feature as of this article. The xAI website currently hosts only 885,000 articles, while Wikipedia has over 7 million articles.
