One of the tournament favorites meets a country where the game truly is the national pastime as the United States faces Venezuela for the World Baseball Classic championship Tuesday.
Team USA is in the final for the third consecutive WBC and looking for a second title to go with the trophy it took in 2017. The Americans stifled a powerful Dominican Republic squad in the semis and will try to replicate that formula of timely hitting and strong pitching in the final.
Venezuela went a similar route to get here via a 4-2 win over tournament Cinderella story Italy, using seven pitchers to navigate the game before a three-run outburst in the seventh put them over the top.
Whatever happens, Venezuela is guaranteed its best WBC finish after previous high point of third place in 2009 when a team led by Miguel Cabrera, Bobby Abreu and Felix Hernandez defeated the U.S. twice during the tournament.
