Manchester United fans have shared their reactions after learning that versatile defender Diogo Dalot is a relative of coach Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese pair have been found out to share common ancestry following an investigation using Portuguese ancestral website Geneall.
Portugal international Dalot has been a regular for Amorim since his arrival at Old Trafford in November 2024 as the substantive replacement for Erik ten Hag. The right-back has played in a number of positions, mostly as a wing-back on either side, for Amorim at the club.
Dalot and Amorim have been found to be great-great grandsons of Carlos Dallot, a 19th century circus performer from France who settled down in Portugal. This revelation has led to raised eyebrows within the fanbase of Manchester United, with a section of the club's fans taking to X to share their opinions.
A fan admitted that the club will never be rid of Dalot due to his family ties to the coach.
@mufcMPB @samuelluckhurst We’re never getting rid of him 😭
Another fan pointed out that they will be stuck with Dalot as Amorim will be unwilling to cause unrest in their family.
@mufcMPB @samuelluckhurst So we are stuck with dalot forever. Ruben must make the clan happy
A fan stated that the relationship is the reason why Dalot always starts, regardless of his form.
@mufcMPB @samuelluckhurst Now it makes sense why he always starts regardless of bad he is
A fan attributed the defender's regular starting berth to his relationship with Amorim.
@mufcMPB @samuelluckhurst No wonder he finds it difficult to keep him on the bench.
Another fan accused Dalot of consistently being the worst player on the pitch and Amorim of nepotism in how he always gets picked.
@mufcMPB @samuelluckhurst Maybe that's why he consistently picks him despite being the worst player on the pitch every week.
Diogo Dalot has started in 39 of 54 games for Manchester United since Ruben Amorim joined the club last year. The former Sporting Club boss named the 26-year-old as part of his leadership group earlier this summer, underlining his place as one of the leaders at the club. The Portugal international has been at Old Trafford since 2018 and spent the 2020-21 season on loan at AC Milan.
Cristiano Ronaldo throws weight behind Manchester United coach
Cristiano Ronaldo has thrown his weight behind Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim, absolving him of criticism for the club's malaise. The former Sporting Club coach has been with the Red Devils for the past year but has failed to make a big impression at the club.
Ronaldo spoke about his former club in his exclusive interview with Piers Morgan, stating that Amorim is doing his best with the cards that he has been dealt. He admitted that his former teammate is not a miracle worker amid the club's struggles.
"He's doing his best. What are you going to do? Miracles? Miracles is impossible. We say in Portugal, 'miracles is only in Fatima', and he's not going to do miracles", he said (via BBC.com).Ruben Amorim moved to Old Trafford before the midway point of the 2024-25 season and saw his side finish the league season in 15th place. They reached the UEFA Europa League final before losing to Tottenham Hotspur, but they have improved this season and are eighth in the league.
