Caitlin Clark did not need much time to deliver her first signature moment of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. Clark opened the second quarter of Team USA’s tournament opener against China by launching an audacious 3-pointer from just beyond the center-court logo. The ball barely touched the net, giving the Americans a 30-14 advantage only four seconds into the period.
The location hardly seemed to matter. Clark crossed half court, saw that her defender was giving her room and immediately pulled the trigger.
USA Basketball shared the remarkable shot on social media.

It was the kind of shot that has become synonymous with Clark, who routinely stretches opposing defenses farther from the basket than they want to go. China learned that lesson almost immediately.

Clark began the game on the bench, with Team USA coach Kara Lawson starting Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, Kahleah Copper, Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart. The Indiana Fever star still made an immediate difference after entering the game. She created open looks for Rhyne Howard, Young and Fever teammate Aliyah Boston, helping the United States build a commanding 27-14 lead after the opening quarter.

The Americans held China to 30 percent shooting over the first two quarters while forcing eight turnovers. Young led the balanced United States offense with 10 first-half points. Stewart added seven points and eight rebounds, while Clark contributed five points and six assists.
The 3-pointer was Clark’s only make from beyond the arc in the opening half, but it was easily the game’s most memorable shot.

Team USA begins pursuit of fifth consecutive World Cup title
The matchup with China marked the beginning of Team USA’s latest pursuit of international gold. The 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup runs from Sept. 4 through Sept. 13 in Berlin, Germany. The United States is competing in Group D alongside China, Italy and Czechia.
Team USA will face Italy on Sept. 6 before concluding group play against Czechia on Sept. 7. The winner of the group advances directly to the quarterfinals, while the second- and third-place finishers must survive an additional qualification-round game. The Americans entered the tournament as four-time defending champions and riding a 30-game World Cup winning streak. They have won 11 World Cup championships overall.
This is Clark’s first appearance in the World Cup, although she made her senior national-team debut during the qualifying tournament in San Juan earlier in 2026. She earned tournament MVP honors there after averaging 11.6 points and a competition-leading 6.4 assists. Clark arrived in Berlin already established as one of the most dangerous long-distance shooters in basketball. It took her barely one quarter to remind the rest of the world.
