The Golden State Warriors' pursuit of Milwaukee Bucks phenomenon Giannis Antetokounmpo took an unexpected turn on Monday night.
In a trade report involving Antetokounmpo, Steph Curry, and Kevin Durant, the Warriors received troubling news about their chances of acquiring the 31-year-old former NBA Finals MVP.
“League sources say that Golden State is aware of recent rumblings that Antetokounmpo can't be assumed to be as eager as he was once perceived to be to relocate to Stephen Curry's town and team,” the Stein Line’s Jake Fischer wrote.
“How credible are such rumblings? Presumably, only Giannis knows for sure. Yet I have heard from sources briefed on the situation that some in the know suspect Antetokounmpo could be turned off by the idea of joining an older team and/or facing the sort of criticism that Kevin Durant continues to absorb to this day about teaming up with Curry.”
Steve Kerr’s crew didn’t receive the nickname ‘Olden State’ before the start of the 2025-26 season for nothing. The Warriors' top 3 contributors are 35 and older, and Al Horford, the organization's new low-post threat, is turning 40 in June.
Simply put, the Warriors are far from a young, exciting Western Conference squad with a positive future outlook, which Antetokounmpo is reportedly taking note of.
Additionally, Antetokounmpo understands the backlash that comes with joining an established, accomplished franchise like the Warriors. While Durant won two titles alongside Curry in the Bay, many believe his legacy will forever be tainted by his decision to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder for the Warriors in 2016.
Golden State won’t be thrilled by Fischer’s report, but the truth is, Antetokounmpo's alleged concerns about taking his talents to the Warriors are valid.
